The Market Review on the Digital Economy Ecosystem, conducted under the Competition Act 2010 [Act 712], marks the eighth market review undertaken by Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC), aimed to review any market in order to determine whether features, or a combination of features, may prevent, restrict, or distort competition.
In the online travel agencies (OTAs) sub-sector, the study focused on web‑ and mobile‑based platforms that enable consumers to book travel services, limited to accommodation booking services.
For the e‑commerce (retail marketplace) segment, the review examines business‑to‑consumer (B2C) marketplace platforms that connect multiple sellers with consumers for the online sale of goods. These platforms act as intermediaries, matching buyers and sellers and facilitating transactions. Service‑based platforms such as ride‑hailing, logistics and food delivery are outside the scope of this segment.
In the mobile operating and payment system sub-sector, the review focuses on software platforms for mobile devices that sit between device hardware and applications. The scope covers mobile operating systems (OS), app stores, app distribution and integrated payment systems.
In the digital advertising services sub-sector, the study examined online advertising marketplaces and platforms where supply- and demand-side partners trade digital ad inventory, with ads served across search results, social media and other online channels.
